Day 2: Lake Michigan Coast and Soo Locks

Jessie: Our second day of vacation started with the blissful fact that we didn't have to leave the hotel until 10:30. We all know what that means: sleeping in! After we left the hotel we stopped at a farmers market to get some raspberries, but first we fed the goats and sheep and Alli and I raced through a maze. We were the oldest kids there but we still enjoyed ourselves, and of course I won the race, beating Alli through the maze by about five feet.

After we left the market we decided to stop and walk along one of the rocky beaches of Lake Michigan. We looked for Petoskey stones and fossilized shells. We spent the better part of the morning smashing rocks to see what was inside. We collected plenty of fossilized shells but only one Petoskey stone. After a quick lunch we were back on the road traveling to Petoskey State Park. We were lucky we stopped earlier to search for stones as this park was much more sandy than rocky. We just laid our blanket out and sat on the beach enjoying the beautiful day, being the only people with clothes on since we didn't want to go swimming. We spent about 30 minutes there and then left to see the Soo Locks, the canal between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

To get there we had to cross the Mackinac Bridge, the third longest suspension bridge in the world. Minutes after crossing the bridge Alli claimed that the bumpy road was tickling her butt. When we arrived at the Soo locks, there was a ship crossing over from Lake Huron to Lake Superior. The canal reminded me of the Panama Canal, with the boats being gated off and either raised or lowered to the height of the lakes. After watching three ships go through the canal we called it quits and went to our hotel, which strangely looked like our house. Here we stayed for the rest of the night, going to bed early after hearing that we would have a long hiking day tomorrow. As if that's anything new!
